Sexy and I Know It?

Everyone has seen of those ads in the latest health or fitness magazine. One of those ones for a new, rock-hard body in just 6 weeks at the low price of $29.99. Whether it be a new cutting-edge supplement or the latest breakthrough in workout routines, the results are seemingly remarkable. And they must be real since they are guaranteed, right? They even have before and after pictures! It’s surely worth the 30 dollars to look like that guy.

I’m here to tell you that Santa Claus isn’t real. And neither are these pictures. So instead of spending your hard earned 30 dollars on this new wonder-pill, here’s another option. Hop in your car, drive to the nearest Walgreens, and buy the cheapest bottle of baby oil that you can possibly find and lather up. Next, fire up that laptop your parents gave you last Christmas and download the trial version of Adobe Photoshop. Once you’ve done that, whip out that iPhone of yours and head to the bathroom for one of those infamous mirror shots. You’re now just a few short steps away; add a chiseled 6-pack here, a little more muscle definition there, maybe a few more veins in your forearms for the ladies and…Voila! The complete body transformation that you were looking for.

6 hours? How about 60 minutes?

So what’s my point? My point is that you can’t believe what you see. Yes, they are “before” and “after” pictures. But before and after what? Unfortunately, what these pictures are taken before and after is often times a photo shoot from the same day. Is this technically a lie? No. Is it unethical? Maybe. But it works on consumers like ourselves every single day.

Most of you (I would hope) already realize that the odds of obtaining the body of a god through something so simple are astronomically low. But it doesn’t matter. The company has already won. All it takes is the poor consumer who believes everything they see to say “I’ll give this a shot” and they’ve already made their money. They know just as well as you and I that this new victim has about as much chance of looking like the behemoth from the advertisement in 6 weeks as I have of winning the next presidential election. They don’t care. But we should. Because this has probably happened to every single one of us at some point in time, no matter what industry we’re talking about. As soon as we fail to question everything media tells us, we’re at its mercy.

So just remember, I can guarantee you the same results at the low price of 5 bucks and an hour of your time.
